5 FOODS THAT COMPROMISE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Updated: Oct 7, 2020

Your immune system is an army that protects your body against viruses and bacteria. It fights infections in the body with its weapons in the form of white blood cells. Somehow, certain foods in our diet can weaken this army and its ability to fight against infections. They are:

1) SUGAR

Eating or drinking too much sugar suppresses the immune system. High glucose levels in the blood decrease the White Blood Cells (WBCs) reactivity which defend the body against infections by producing antibodies. Sugar makes it difficult for the immune cells to take up vitamin C (a vital nutrient for immune cells). Just 1 bottle of soda can disable the immune system for 4-5 hours. Prefer sugar in the form of fructose (fruits), which nourish your body with many more vitamins.

2) FOODS CONTAINING MSG

Mono-Sodium Glutamate (MSG) is a commonly used flavour enhancer for instant noodle products, frozen foods, processed meats, etc. MSG causes a significant increase in oxidative stress, and interferes the production of lymphocytes (one of the several different types of white blood cells)

3) ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

Alcohol consumption reduces the function of your macrophages (large white blood cells that break down foreign invaders. Alcohol also impairs the production of T cells (Thymus cells) and B cells (Bone marrow cells) which are the major cellular components of the adaptive immune response.

4) CAFFEINE

The early morning caffeine kick that awakens most of us, comes along with a boost of Cortisol (a hormone released in response to stress). High levels of cortisol in the body on a regular basis suppresses your immunity. It also reduces the number of T cells in the body and interferes with the function of lymphocytes.

5) SALT

Too much salt in the diet not only increases your blood pressure, but also makes it difficult for your body to fight against bacterial infections. 5 gm/day salt is sufficient to meet the daily recommended allowances. Chips, Namkeens, Processed foods, Packet foods, etc provide additional sodium to the body and makes you prone to infections.
